Visible Light Spectrum

A: LED (Light Emitting Diode) light therapy is a completely natural light therapy.  LED Light therapy is the direct application of optimal wavelengths of light to achieve therapeutic benefits.  All living creatures, including humans, need the suns light/energy to survive.  Special nanometers that rejuvenate skin have been isolated that actually speed up the cells nature regenerative effects by 150 to 200 percent, along with creating oxygen free radicals in the porpherin chain destroying P. Acnes, the bacteria know for causing acne.

Light therapy has been studied scientifically for the application of light energy to the skin for therapeutic benefits. It is a natural photobiochemical reaction similar to the process of plant photocynethsis.  Originally discovered by NASA about 40 years ago to stimulate plant growth, LED Therapy was found to encourage cellular metabolism, accelerate the repair and replenishment of damaged skin cells, as well as stimulate the production of collagen - the basis for healthy, clear, youthful-looking skin. The technology was found to encourage the healing of injuries incurred by astronauts while in space.  Even in a zero gravity environment, where cell growth is normally very slow, light energy was shown to stimulate the metabolism in muscle and bone as well as skin and subcutaneous tissue.  LED Lights are also used by physicians for many medical needs; an example is the use of LED Lights to speed recover of oral ulcers in children undergoing chemotherapy as well as other medical needs.

Over the last several years , the field of cosmetology introduced a variety of new treatments which rely on the therapeutic effects of light at wave-lengths between visible light and infrared.  LEDs of various wavelengths, have shown strong efficacy for the treatment of inflammatory acne, rosacea, wrinkles, sun damage, and uneven skin tone.

The energy delivered by the LED Lights enhances cellular metabolism, accelerates the repair and replenishment of damaged skin cells, as well as stimulates the production of collagen - the foundation of a healthy and smooth skin. The treatment is non-ablative, non-invasive, painless and has absolutely no downtime. It is safe for all skin type and all ages.  There is no need to miss work or social functions after the treatment.

      .

Red LED light improves the healthy metabolic activity of your skin and is a commliment to any skin care regimen.

420nm blue light kills a bacteria called P.Acnes.  This is the causitive bacteria in acne, and removal of the bacteria greatly improves your skin and prevents most acne. The light creates free raticals in the porphoryn chain present in the bacteria but not in human skin cells.  The free raticals cause mutations in the bacterias DNA so it can not reproduce, thus, killing the bacteria.

633nm - 700mn red light is anti-inflammatory and improves healing and increases the rate of production of collagen (giving a gentle facelift/antiwrinkling effect that lasts as long as you continue treatments). Skin tone is improved with treatment, along with helping heal red marks; >10% or more faster.

830nm infrared light has more regerative properties then the lower nanometers of  red visible light.  Clinical studies have found this light generates more collagen production which improves the reduction of wrinkles and fine lines; 95% of participants had good to excellent results.

      Blue Light (420nm)

      • Acne - Kills acne causing bacteria ( P. Acnes)

      Red Light (830nm)

      • Reduction of wrinkles, horizontal and vertical crepe lines of the face and décolleté.
      • Reduced facial pigmentation.
      • Increased circulation and moisture retention.
      • Increases skin's natural cellular activity.
      • Reduced melasma and chloasma.
      • Lightening of cavernous hemangioma (but not cure).
      • Histology: Biopsy studies demonstrate increased deposition of collagen and elastin  (MT stains, von Giesson and Alcian blue stains).
      • EM: showed fibroblast proliferation and release of collagen.
      • There is thus clinical and histological evidence to confirm improvement of the aged skin after LED phototherapy. The rejuvenation of the skin after LED phototherapy is safe and predictable.

      Red Light (633nm to  700mn)

      • Similar to 830nm however less efficacious.

A: Blue Light Phototherapy was approved by the FDA in 2002 for treating acne.  Recent studies have found specific nanometers of Blue Light improve acne for about 80% of people over 3 months. Another 10% of people see some improvement.  Results should be seen within the first 2 weeks of consistent treatment. After 4 weeks of consistent treatment most people notice about 60% reduction in visible acne.  After 12 weeks those participating in the research experienced clearing of about 80%.  This is comparable or better to Benzol Peroxide without the redness, burning and dryness, and similar to other treatments like antibiotics.

According to a report presented to the American Academy of Dermatology, just two 15-minute exposures per week for a period of four weeks using a low intensity blue light source with an output of between 405-420 nm (nanometers) "produced a 60 percent reduction in acne in 80 percent of patients. Reported remissions from acne lasted as long as three to eight months".

As published in the British Journal of Dermatology, Blue Light Therapy was studied in the treatment of mild-to-moderate acne. After 12 weeks of 15-minute daily active treatments with a portable blue LED light source, subjects showed a 76% mean improvement in inflammatory acne lesions. Both researchers and patients favored Blue Light Therapy, with more patients achieving improvement in acne over other types of treatment groups. The research concluded that blue light "acts synergistically in improving acne by combining anti-inflammatory actions, rendering phototherapy with blue light an effective and safe treatment for acne."

The 660nm red light encourages healing of the acne lesions by increasing circulation and collagen production.

      Jet Lag

Light therapy is also considered as a viable treatment for jet lag.  Exposure to bright light during the appropriate time periods before, during and after air travel can reduce the symptoms of jet lag and accelerate the recalibration of the body clock. NASA has used timed doses of bright light to prepare astronauts for late night launches since 1991.

      A: Acne Wand:
You'll see some improvement in a few days with both red and blue light therapy. This is a combination of  the blue light killing the P.Acnes almost completely in the first few days, and the red light improving the look of your overall complexion.

It will sometimes take 12 weeks for the pores to be completely unclogged.  This is due to your skins natural rejuvenation and exfoliation process. In the meantime you will continue to get acne; but at an ever slowing rate. Some people don't notice any effect for the first 6 weeks, because normal variation in acne covers the effect. Some people don't get good clearance till the 12th week. Under no circumstances give up!

      Skin Wand:

Some people see improvement in wrinkles within a few days, but it will usually take about a week to see results; some report it taking four to six weeks.  Various physical conditions such as age, skin condition, diet, alcohol consumption, prescription drug usage, smoking, and exercise can influence the rate of improvement. The effects of LED light are often subtle at first, since unlike lasers, peels and other ablative treatments, LED light does not damage the skin to force it to regenerate.  A double blind clinical study found the Skin Wand's wave length showed good to excellent results in 95% of participants!

Benifits will continue to show on your skin with continued use.  Most people notice excellent results after 12 weeks of application.  However, with continued treatment, people have continued to experience significant change after using the Skin Wand for 6 months or a year.

      A: Acne Wand:
You can use the lights up to 4 times a day, however, most people have good success using the light 2 times per day.

Hold the light against skin or up to 3 inches from your face and treat an infected area for 10-20 seconds.  It's that simple!

The point is to keep using the light to kill off the bacteria.  Consitancy is the key to having a clear complexion with any acne treatment.

      Skin Wand:
Most people have good success using the light 2 times per day for 1 - 2 minutes with excellent results.

The light can be held against skin, or about 3 inches from skin.  This wavelength of light not visible by the human eye.  However, the light treats about a 3 inch diameter circle when held about 3 inches from your face.

LED therapy is quickly becoming known in the cosmetic industry as one of the most effective and non-invasive ways to help bring the skin back into balance to its natural state.

A: Yes.  The peak wavelengths of light used in the Acne & Skin Wands are outside those that may cause damage to the skin and do not emit dangerous amounts of ultraviolet rays. Scientific experiments indicate that neither blue nor red light causes cancer.

It is very important to keep the violet/blue and red lights out of your eyes. It's thought that normal blue light even in sunlight gradually damages the retina, so 100% protection against the blue light is essential. Always close your eyes and never look directly in the lights.

      Contraindications:
(always consult your physician before using any products on this site)
      1. Pregnancy - avoid the abdomen and ask your doctor
      2. Skin cancer or suspicious mole - (the light nourishes cells and increases metabolic activity)
      3. Hyperthyroism or take medication for hyperthyroid conditions (some people place a thick towel over their thyroid gland)
      4. Never use on infants
      5. Accutane - ask your doctor when it is safe to use light after accutane treatment
      6. Epilepsy — certain light frequencies can trigger an epileptic seizure
      7. If you are photo-allergic, or are taking any medication that causes light sensitivity, such as Tetracycline
      8. Patients with porphyria should avoid most forms of light therapy. Patients on certain drugs like methotrxate or chloroquine should use caution with light therapy as there is a chance that these drugs could cause porphyria.
      9. If you have been diagnosed with bipolar disease - lights may trigger mania - consult your physician

A: It is not necessary to use other acne products, but you can if you like.  Both lights are a complement to any skin care regimen.  However, you should not use topical solutions like Accutane or photosensitive products like Tetracycline or certain herbs.

      We recommend:
      1. Washing your face with a mild cleasner and exfoliator
      2. Apply LED light Therapy
      3. Apply a moisturizer with an SPF of 15 or higher
(If you use the light multiple times during the day it is not necessary to wash your face each time - just the morning and evening)

      Q: What is Ion Therapy?

Ion Therapy utilizes ions as a polarizing agent to effectively penetrate the skin barrier with anti-oxydents, cleansing, moisture and cell rejuvenation.

Ions are molecules that have gained or lost an electron. Positive air ions are molecules that have lost an electron; a negative air ion is generally a molecule of oxygen with an extra electron. Ions are created in nature by sunlight, radiation, and moving air and water that causes electrons to leave hydrogen, nitrogen, and other molecules and attach themselves to oxygen molecules.

Research studies have also shown the biological activity of small negative ions in other areas. There appears to be a connection between ions and mood. It was found that exposure to negative ions can reduce irritability and depression and improve cognitive performance and energy. They found high density negative ions to be as effective as light therapy in treatment.

      What is a Negative Ion?

Remember that feeling you've experienced near a waterfall or high in the mountains? Those are two places that thousands of negative ions occur. They create an effect on human biochemistry." Negative Ion works as antioxidants that neutralize the damaging effects of free radicals and help skin cope with damaging effects of environmental influences.

      What are Free Radicals?

Free radicals are aggressive, unstable, oxygen-containing molecules. They have lost an electron and need to steal other electrons from other molecules, thereby damaging the cells from which they steal. Free radical damage is part of the cause of aging. This is why it is important to have antioxidants both internally through nutrition and externally, used topically through products. Free radicals damage membranes and normal cellular metabolism systems. They can also damage DNA and RNA, and contribute to the hardening of collagen and elastin cells. This all leads to premature aging and increases skin sensitivity, irritation, age spots, and dryness”.
